Love & Hate

You pinch my cheeks until they're bright red,
Fill my hat until it's filled with grass and paper
then dump it all on my head in one swish.

But when all eyes are off us,
You brush off the leaves out of my hat,
and tuck the stray strands of hair away from my face.

How long will we act like this?
We pull faces at each other during class,
draw in each other's books whenever no ones looking.
But when the eyes are back on us we change,
once again fly the insults and the broken pieces of grass back in our faces.

You sing songs to me behind the classrooms.
Smile at me like I'm the sun.
Piggy-back me and spin me around until everything blurs into one.
And I'd close my eyes...To feel the lightest pressure on my cheek.
I would open my eyes to see you grinning at me,
your eyes sparking mischievously at me.

Will there be a day when we can smile in front of others?
When we can hold hands...
When we can be together?
